The High Valley AVA lies in eastern Lake County at roughly 1,600 to 3,000 feet above sea level. Its east-west mountain orientation, like that in Sta. Rita Valley in Santa Barbara County, is unusual in California and allows for cooling breezes off the Pacific Ocean. The AVA is also notable for volcanic soils. Brassfield’s Eruption, with its 14.9 percent stated alcohol, is a suavely textured powerhouse. Its supple texture suggests Merlot in the blend, but that grape is not present. Brassfield blends Syrah, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Zinfandel to achieve this robust red. Along with its glossy texture, there is a hint of sweetness from ripe fruit and alcohol. It is an ideal choice for current drinking for those looking for powerful black fruited wines with a silky-smooth texture.
