The Gran Selezione category of Chianti Classico represents the apex of that DOCG’s quality pyramid. The regulations are more severe than for Chianti Classico Riserva, requiring that only estate grapes can be used and that Sangiovese must comprise 90 percent of the blend with the remainder coming from other indigenous reds, but not international ones such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. The label announces that the wine comes from Castelnuovo Berardenga, a southern section of Chianti Classico known for producing ripe and powerful wines. True to that character, the youthful 2022 La Pieve delivers a harmonious combination of dark fruit, a sprinkle of herbal notes, and a touch of minerality. It deserves the Gran Selezione designation because of its plush texture and added complexity. It would benefit from a few years in the cellar to allow it all to come together. Those who love Chianti Classico would be wise to find space for it in their home or cellar.
