San Felice, Toscana IGT (Tuscany, Italy) Pugnitello 2022 ($77)

San Felice saved Pugnitello, an ancient Tuscan grape variety, from extinction in the 1980s and now a couple of dozen Tuscan producers have embraced this grape that produces a robust red wine. It takes its name from its small compact cluster of grapes that look like a fist (pugno is fist in Italian). San Felice incorporates a small amount of it in its Chianti Classico blend but also makes a stunning and unique monovarietal from it. San Felice’s weighty and racy 2022, delivers hefty black fruit flavors mixed with earthy accents. Fine tannins are a counterpoint to its charmingly rustic profile. Drink this one this summer with charcoal grilled leg of lamb.
