Attems, Friuli DOC (Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Italy) Pinot Grigio “Ramato” 2024 ($21, Vintus)

The Pinot Grigio grape has a pinkish hue to the skin which means the wine can take on a bit of color if the producer opts to keep the skins in contact with the juice for a little time during pressing. That’s exactly what Attems does and why they label the wine Ramato, Italian for copper, which describes this wine’s delicate pale color. I prefer to describe things as they are, as opposed to what they’re not, but will make an exception here. This is not your typical innocuous Pinot Grigio. Despite its modest 12.5 percent stated alcohol, it has substance buttressed by wonderful uplifting acidity that keeps it fresh and vibrant. Again, back to what it’s not — it’s not a patio sipping Pinot Grigio. Try it with sushi or tuna tataki.
