The conventional wisdom that mountain-grown grapes impart more structure to the resulting wine is borne out in this plumy and ripe Merlot with a stated alcohol of 14 percent. The tannins, typically more apparent in mountain-grown fruit, are finely honed, which makes this powerful Merlot accessible. Savory nuances add complexity to this robust red. Certainly not an insipid Merlot, Mayacamas shows the potential of the grape when handled correctly. It would be a good choice for the dinner table as opposed to a “glass of Merlot” before a meal.
