Rioja is rightly known for its alluring and versatile red wines. Remírez de Ganuza, founded only in 1989 but already one of the region’s top producers, excels with its whites. Primarily made from old-vine Viura, Malvasia, and Garnacha Blanca, this Reserva spends eight months aging on its lees in new French oak barrels. It displays marvelous harmony of power, spiciness, and freshness, all coming together seamlessly. Nothing is out of place. The on-the-lees barrel aging adds depth without intruding on the core of fruit. There is not a trace of heaviness. I enjoyed it at New York’s Casa Mono, one of the city’s top Spanish restaurants, where it matched perfectly with even the highly seasoned dishes.
