Domaine Lafouge, a family estate established in Auxey-Duresses in 1650, is a name to remember. Currently run by Gilles Lafouge and his son Maxine, the 4th and 5th generations, respectively, Domaine Lafouge delivers high quality, well-priced Burgundy (a rarity these days). As a known Burgundy nut, I am continually asked were to find value there. I always include Domaine Lafouge in my recommendations. Aligoté, a white grape that comprises only about five percent of plantings in Burgundy, is having a renaissance. Formerly, the best use of Aligoté was for making a Kir, an aperitif where a dollop of crème de cassis balanced the grape’s screeching acidity. Climate change and the dedication of growers like Lafouge have helped change that. Lafouge’s brisk 2024 Aligoté imbues its unusual depth with energy. Both creamy and zingy, it is a great summertime wine – or for any time when refreshment value is desired. Save your crème de cassis for ice cream.
