Philippe Guigal continued the family tradition of honoring the next generation by planting a new vineyard, La Reynarde, to honor the birth of their twin sons. The 1.6-ha plot sits in the Fongeant lieu-dit in the Côte Brune only 500 feet from La Turque, and takes its name from the stream, Le Reynard, that separates the two Côtes. In keeping with the Guigal tradition of making vineyard names feminine, the name of this 4th LaLa became La Reynarde. Work in the vineyard started in 2010 and was a herculean task. Because the site sits on an incredibly steep slope, it took them five years to build walls, terraces, and roads. The soil a mixture of granite, schist and iron-laden clay help account for La Reynarde’s explosive power. Planting – it’s all Syrah – took place between 2015 and 2018. The majestic 2022 is their first vintage. The fragrant 2022 leads with minerals, not flowers and then proceeds to explode with an elegant muscularity. Despite its proximity to La Turque, it’s far more intense, sitting stylistically between it and La Landonne. The fine tannins add elegance to the texture of this impeccably balance wine. This is a great success, especially considering the young vines. But, as Philippe points out, early vintages of La Turque, which also came from young vines, were fabulous and have developed beautifully.
