Antonelli, Spoleto Trebbiano Spoletino DO (Umbria, Italy) “Trebium” 2024 ($23)

Let me unravel the name of this DOC since it’s confusing with both a geographic name, Spoleto, and a grape name, Trebbiano Spoletino. Spoleto is a well-known (at least to music lovers) town in Umbria. Trebbiano Spoletino is an ancient Umbrian variety that is distinct from, and makes far more interesting wine than, the more common Trebbiano Toscano or Trebbiano Abruzzo. Antonelli, a longtime leading name in the region, makes two wines from Trebbiano Spoletino. This one, Trebium, has no skin contact nor any barrel influences during fermentation or aging, which allows its enticing floral elements to shine. The aromatic and lively 2024 has good body and finishes with an intriguing and palate-awakening white pepper-like spice.
