Mayacamas Vineyards, Mt. Veeder – Napa Valley (California) Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 ($185)

After all these years Mayacamas still has its mojo. Their 2022 Cabernet shows the heights Napa Valley Cabernet can achieve. With many Napa Cabs falling into an overdone style, the robust yet balanced 2022 Mayacamas is no monster. It dazzles with intrigue, displaying a plethora of dark fruit notes coupled with a marvelous stoney, even lava-like earthiness. Regardless of how you describe the flavors, each sip brings new ones, forcing you to revisit. Alas, the taste that captivated you has disappeared only to be replaced an equally enigmatic one. Suave tannins add to its appeal, but its restrained complexity is what keeps you coming back. Yes, its glossy texture allows you to enjoy it now, but based on my experience with their Cabernets from the 1980s, they develop extremely well, so no rush.
