Chateau St Jean first produced its flagship “Cinq Cepages” in 1990 and it gained cult status after Wine Spectator selected as its wine of year in 1999. The 2022 marks the first vintage under the ownership of Foley Family Wines, which acquired the property in 2021. This Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend of the five Bordeaux varieties (hence the name) remains the same but changes every year depending on how the individual varieties turn out from the growing season. The 2022 contains Cabernet Sauvignon (73 percent), Malbec (11 percent), Merlot (9 percent), Cabernet Franc (4 percent) and Petit Verdot. This robust red, weighing at a stated 14.5 percent alcohol, delivers plenty of dark black fruit flavors balanced beautifully by savory herbal ones. Good acidity amplifies its complexity in the finish and keeps it fresh. Suave, polished tannins allow you to enjoy it now with a well-charred steak.
