Frescobaldi, Chianti DOCG (Tuscany, Italy) “Castiglioni” 2024 ($15, Vintus)

If there is a more enjoyable and versatile red wine at this price, please, someone tell me. The Frescobaldi family, a Tuscan legend, has been making wine for 700 years. To me, the most impressive aspect of the Frescobaldi portfolio is the quality of their wines across the board, from Masseto, with its near thousand-dollar price tag, to this modestly priced gem. The greater Chianti DOCG, from which this wine hails, can get lost in the shadow of Chianti Classico and Chianti Rufina, the more upscale subzones within the greater Chianti area. But Chianti is not a DOCG to overlook, as this wine shows. Frescobaldi’s Castiglioni, from their estate, has an impeccable and balanced combination of bright red fruit and nuanced herbal accents, all without a trace of astringency. The marvelous texture and freshness of this Chianti is just what you want with pizza, burgers, take-out chicken, or a lively tomato-based pasta. Stock up for the summer because you’ll want to open it whenever the grill is on.
