By now, everyone knows that the Marlborough region of New Zealand is famous for their Sauvignon Blanc. Well, it turns out, this Pinot Gris shows that the region is not a one-horse show. It offers a subtle and engaging pear-like nuance, good body, and vibrant acidity. I don’t like to describe wines by what they are not, but in this case I will, because Pinot Gris, also known as Pinot Grigio, comes in two basic styles—and te Pā’s does not fit into either. Theirs is definitely not an innocuous Pinot Grigio, nor is it a heavier, bolder style, often with a hint of sweetness, of Pinot Gris from Alsace. It falls nicely in between, which means it’s a good choice for spicy food or the plethora of flavors that often accompanies sushi.
