Montefalco Rosso is the more ready-to-drink category of the prestigious, powerful, and tannic Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG. Unlike other rosso categories, Montefalco Rosso does not follow the varietal composition of its big brother. Rather, it focuses on Sangiovese (60 to 80%), requiring only 10 to 25% of Sagrantino. Other red varieties can make up anywhere from 0 to 30% of the blend. The Sagrantino, which comprises 20% of the blend of Bellafonte’s beauty, adds just a touch of earthy power while not overwhelming the crunchy, red cherry-like fresh fruitiness of Sangiovese, which comprises the rest of the blend. Firm but not hard tannins lend structure to this fresh and floral mid-weight red. It would be a good choice for anything coming off the grill this summer.
