Mas des Brousses, Terrasses du Larzac (Coteaux du Languedoc, France) 2011

($26, Polaner): Although the Terrasses du Larzac, one of the best subregions of the Coteaux du Languedoc, has not yet gained official recognition, I have listed it as the appellation because it is expected to be awarded that status within the year.  Already Terrasses du Larzac appears more prominently on the label than the legal appellation, Coteaux du Languedoc.  Despite the ambiguity about the labeling, there’s no question about the wine’s quality.  A blend of Syrah (60%) and Mourvèdre, it delivers concentrated black fruit and herbal notes with considerable class.  It would be a fine choice for robust winter fare or grilled meat this summer.  It has more polish than you might expect from a wine from the Languedoc, which explains why Terrasses du Larzac deserves its own appellation.
