M. Marengo, Barbera d’Alba (Piedmont, Italy) Vigneto Pugnane 2012

($25, Marc de Grazia Selection): The Pugnane vineyard located in Castiglione Faletto, one of the important communes of Barolo, is usually planted with Nebbiolo because the grape planted in that locale makes exemplary Barolo.  Marco Marengo says the vineyard is also well suited for Barbera.  Since he wanted Barbera in his portfolio he decided to plant some there.  I, for one, am glad he did.  This is top-notch Barbera with mouth-watering acidity — that’s the grape speaking — that supports and amplifies dark fruit notes. I suspect its concentration and finesse reflects the grandeur of the site.  This is an amazing Barbera.
