Castano, Yecla (Spain) “Solanera” 2003

($14, Eric Solomon Selections): Yecla, a small DO (Denominación de Origen or DO is comparable to France’s Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée, or AOC) on Spain’s southeastern coast is well suited for the Monastrell grape (aka Mourvèdre) because it needs the Mediterranean sun to ripen.  Castano blends Monastrell from old vines with Cabernet Sauvignon to produce a dense, earthy wine.  The old vines provide fruit that lends complexity and length to this wine. 90 Michael Apstein Nov 21, 2006
