Lamole di Lamole, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG (Tuscany, Italy) Vigna Grospoli 2020 ($57)

Gran Selezione sits at the pinnacle of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid. The wines must be aged for 30 months, compared to 24 for Riserva, and come entirely from the producer’s own vineyards. Lamole di Lamole opts to make two Gran Selezione wines, both from single vineyards, Vigneto Campolungo and this one, Vigneto Grospoli. They purchased the 2-ha (5-acre) Grospoli vineyard, planted in 1994 and situated at 540-580 meters above sea level, in 2017, and made their first wine from it in 2018, which make the 2020 only their third bottling. And what a bottling it is! Dark cherry notes, minerals, and enticing herbal notes sit atop a firm but not hard base in this racy and elegant wine. Finesse-filled and long, it shows how Sangiovese planted in the right place and transformed into wine by a talented team can excel. Either drink in now before it closes down and enjoy its firm refinement or plan to put it in the cellar for a decade.
