Capezzana, Barco Reale di Carmignano (Tuscany, Italy) 2022 ($18, Della Terra Direct)

Carmignano, a small DOCG, just northwest of Florence, requires the blending of Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese. Regulations require Barco Reale to be made from the same grapes as Carmignano grown basically in the area. Think of Barco Reale di Carmignano as a Rosso. Just as Rosso di Montalcino is a lighter, fruity, earlier to drink expression of Brunello, Barco Reale allows you to gain an insight into the charms and stature of Carmignano. Capezzana, arguably Carmignano’s best and most well-known producer, makes a consistently engaging Barco Reale. The mid-weight 2022 delivers lots of bight cherry-like flavors accented by savory notes, all supported by mild tannins and mouth-watering acidity. Enjoy it now while (hopefully) your bottle of their Carmignano ages in your cellar.
