Can Sumoi, Penedes (Catalonia, Spain) “La Rosa” 2024 ($24)

Can Sumoi is a relatively new, still wine project from the famed Raventós i Blanc sparkling wine producer, which dates all the way back to 1497. Pepe Raventós, the current head of the family-run company, explains that this fine rosé is a blend of Sumoll, an indigenous red grape, and Xarel-lo. He goes on to remark that, “the combination gives us ripeness and acidity at harvest.” His aim is to make the best rosé in the world. Given his talents, commitment and dedication, I would not bet against him. La Rosa is a light red masquerading as a rosé. Balancing elements of red fruits and minerals, this winner has character, density, and a delightful hint of bitterness in the finish. Fine as an aperitivo type wine, it has enough substance to hold up to a tuna-heavy salad Niçoise or flavorful fare this summer. You and your guests would also be happy drinking it at Thanksgiving.
