Maison Albert Bichot, Pouilly-Fuissé (Burgundy, France) 2022 ($40)

The major Beaune-based négociants either make wines from their own vineyards or from grapes or newly pressed juice (must) they purchase from others. Sometimes they even buy wine made by others and finish the aging process themselves. They prefer to make wine from either their own grapes or purchased grapes because they control the pressing of the grapes, and the resulting wine is usually better. Sometimes the circumstances require them to buy newly made wine and finish it themselves. With this particular bottling the label indicates, “vinifié, élevé, et mis en bouteille par Albert Bichot” which means Bichot did it all—they vinified, aged and bottled it—which helps explain why it is so good. Now that the French wine authorities have granted vineyards in Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru status, it has been harder for négociants to find high-quality village wine at an affordable price, which is another reason consumers should flock to this one. Bichot’s 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé combines a subtle but luxurious creamy texture with distinct minerality and a lengthy finish that just amplifies its charms. Thankfully, not an overt in-your-face kind of wine, it dazzles you with its elegance and stature.
