($22, Adventures In Wine): It’s clear to me after tasting a range of aromatic white wines from New Zealand that the Kiwis make exciting whites in addition to their unique and distinctive Sauvignon Blanc. Huia’s Pinot Gris proves the point. It clearly has the weight of Pinot Gris — as opposed to the lighter style of Pinot Grigio, the other name for the same grape. An unusual delicacy, missing from many Pinot Gris, complements its stone fruit character. The 14% stated alcohol indicates it’s a ripe wine, but not a sweet one. Despite its mouth coating viscosity, it’s not heavy or ponderous. Its weight and body makes it a good choice for foods that have a bit of a kick. It can kick back — in a nice way.
