($25, Atlantic Imports): Waiheke Island, located in Auckland harbor on New Zealand’s North Island, has long been known as a prime site for Bordeaux varietals. Kennedy Point Vineyard, established just in 1996, also planted Syrah and judging from this wine, it was a great choice. As is the custom in the Cote Rôtie appellation of the Northern Rhone where Syrah reigns supreme, Kennedy Point includes a touch–less than 5%–Viognier in their Syrah. This is an elegant Syrah loaded with hints of both white and black pepper to complement its lush, rich black fruit flavors. Long and elegant–not a bombastic style of Syrah–this well-priced winner is a delight to drink now. 91 Michael Apstein May 26, 2009
