Domaine d’Aupilhac, Languedoc-Montpeyroux (Languedoc, France) 2010

($20, Kermit Lynch): The appellation system in the Languedoc is currently undergoing dramatic changes. Technically, this wine is still an AOC Coteaux du Languedoc with the name of the subregion, Montpeyroux, on the label. Soon, it will have its own appellation, simply Montpeyroux. But let’s leave the specifics of the nomenclature aside because they detract from the enjoyment you get from this wine. A blend of the usual Mediterranean suspects, Mourvèdre (30%), Carignan (29%), Syrah (25%) and Grenache, it’s dense and ripe, as you’d expect from a wine from this part of the South of France. The unexpected aspect is the elegance and class that accompanies the density. Tannins are quite graceful and polished, making it easy to enjoy this burly wine with rich meats. Not overdone, you can appreciate the layers of flavor that pour forth.
