($30, Station Imports): Although New Zealand’s Central Otago region on the South Island is prized Pinot Noir area–80% of the vineyards are planted to that grape–it should come as no surprise that Riesling does very well there as well because it, like Pinot Noir, likes cooler climate. Central Otago’s coolness means the grapes don’t get overripe and hold their acidity, which translates into vivacity in wine. And vivacious is a good way to describe Rippon’s Riesling. It has a bright green apple-like fruitiness and bite. The uplifting acidity persists into the finish, making it even more refreshing. It’s a good choice for Asian fare.
