Tenute Lunelli, Montefalco Rosso DOC (Umbria, Italy) “Ziggurat” 2023 ($25, Taub Family Selections)

Montefalco Rosso is the more ready-to-drink category related to the prestigious, powerful, and tannic Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG. Unlike other “Rosso” categories (e.g., Rosso di Montalcino), Montefalco Rosso does not follow the varietal composition of its big brother. Rather, it focuses on Sangiovese (60 to 80%), requiring only 10 to 25 % of Sagrantino. Other red varieties can make up anywhere from 0 to 30% of the blend. Lunelli’s fragrant and fresh 2023 Montefalco Rosso is a blend of Sangiovese (70% and Sagrantino 15%). Winemaker Lucca Capaldini, says he uses Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon “like salt and pepper” to fill out the blend depending on the vintage. This fresh and bright Rosso leads with cherry-like notes and finishes with an attractive hint of bitterness in the finish. Mild and suave tannins support without intruding, allowing you to enjoy this charming Rosso now.
