Drylands, Marlborough (New Zealand) Dry Riesling 2007

($16, Franciscan Estate): The Marlborough region of New Zealand is best known for Sauvignon Blanc.  Based on this stellar Riesling, it should be known for that varietal as well.  It has an uncommon combination of delicate fruitiness–without sweetness–and an earthy minerality.  Bright acid gives it a welcome edginess. This is a versatile wine, equally at home as an aperitif as on the table, especially with spicy or highly flavored dishes. 91 Michael Apstein May 26, 2009
